About Us
Blackhat Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2000 near the Blackhat rock formation in the Tse Bonito area of the Navajo Nation. Blackhat works to rescue the over 200,000 abandoned and stray animals on the Navajo Nation and to spay/neuter and vaccinate the animals currently being kept as pets. We are one of only a handful of rescues working on the Navajo Nation, a Native American reservation encompassing over 27,000 square miles that spans Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado.
Our mission is to decrease the tremendous overpopulation and suffering of dogs and cats on the Navajo Nation. Navajo Nation Animal Control, which as of this writing included only six animal control officers and one tribal veterinarian, estimates there are at least 200,000 and potentially up to 400,000 free-roaming dogs and cats. Pets are generally allowed to breed freely and excess animals are dumped at gas stations, grocery stores, or out in the desert.
